Wheel Covers & Hub-caps

Wheel Data and Modifications includes information on the hubcaps fitted to the various wheels together with illustrations. In summary there were the following standard types fitted. Special bodied cars seem to have had a variety of fittings, and no doubt there were aftermarket products available.

On the early series of Aurelias the domed cap was produced in chromed brass and in aluminium alloy. It is a push fit over 3 spring steel retainers, which should have a rubber cover and are riveted or screwed to ‘L’, shaped mounts, which are riveted or welded to the wheel disc.

Both the early and late series wheel trims have been remanufactured at various times and are currently (2004) available from Italy and through specialist suppliers.

The late series wheel trims were in two parts. The outer alloy and chromed brass wheel cover is an impressive piece of work but is prone to damage and eventually to sacrificial corrosion. It is held in place by the chromed steel/brass centre plate. This part has ‘Lancia’ embossed across the centre and this usually painted to match the car colour. On the rear face is a threaded centre mounting, which is threaded, left-hand or right hand for the respective sides of the car.

The hub cap/centre plate is rotated onto a stud mounted at the front on a ‘hoop’, which is attached to the wheel through two of its mountings, and at the rear to a pot, which also act as a protective cover to the outer universal joint. Each wheel therefore has a different hubcap mounting due to the handed thread. The hubcap is 115 mm overall diameter & 25 mm in height. The distance between the dismounting tool locating holes is 120 mm

Rattling from the wheels will result from loose fitting or wear in the above parts.
