Hand Brake

The hand brake is pendant from the centre of the dashboard. It is awkward to use, especially if seat belts have been fitted (best to fitted inertia reel type belts).

The design remained much the same except that on B20/B24 5th& 6th series cars a cable was substituted for the rod linkage which transfers the motion form the vertical at the bulkhead in the engine compartment, to the horizontal under the floor pan.

Adjustment

The main setting up of the one-piece cable (#25 or #23) is made at the pulley wheel (#10) under the floor pan, as shown in the diagrams below.

Routine adjustment is more conveniently done in the engine compartment at the centre of the bulkhead. Earlier cars have a butterfly nut and the later ones with a cable have a locking nut & Bowden cable arrangement. See #39 below or #19/40 for later cars on next page.

Maintenance

Refer to Tav. 37 page 07.1/1: The cable runs through a pulley wheel #20 and through a locating eye and rear pulley on each side. These are bolted to the floor pan and should be greased regularly.

Refer to Tavs. 43 page 07.3/4: The lever #17 operates rod #24 to expand the shoes and is returned by spring #20. #23 is a dust boot. Lubrication of these parts should be made especially where #17 passes through the brake shoe. The return shoe should of course be strong.

Handbrake Warning Light

A simple copper contact at the pendant lever under the dashboard serves an instrument warning light to shop when the hand brake is on. The bulb is 2.5 Watt, although a 4-Watt bulb shows better in daylight.
