Notes on Lubrication of Front Suspension

  1. The front suspension oil feed was mounted as a reservoir on all Berlina & Coupe Aurelias in tandem with the brake fluid reservoir. The design varied slightly during production.
  2. B24 cars had separate reservoirs for the brakes & front suspension
  3. The plunger mechanism is to be lifted (therefore pressurising the feed) every 3000 km & the front suspension fed with oil (upper reservoir only) alternately using the tap on the reservoir (separate plungers for B24 cars). A noisy suspension will indicate need for oil.
  4. The reservoir capacity is 0.27 litres/0.46 Imp. Pints/0.56 US pints
  5. The reservoir should be filled with one of the following: Mobiloil Arctic, Esso Motor Oil 20W, Veedol HD Plus 20-30, Arexon or an equivalent
  6. The lower reservoir should also be maintained every 3000 km & filled with the equivalent of:
Veedol HD Plus 40, Mobiloil AF, Mobilube GX90, Esso Gear Oil GP90.
A plug on the rear of the stub axle unit is provided for filling the lower reservoir, except to B20-2702 to 2951 (late 3rd series).
  7. Adjustment of the front dampers is made by a lever at the top of the pillar (e.g. #4 on page 04.1/01). When screwed in fully clockwise the suspension is very stiff & should be turned anti-clockwise to obtain the desired damping. The adjustment varies for summer & winter conditions as well as the use to which the car is being put & road surfaces. Recommendations are as follows:
Aurelia Model Turns from fully Tight - Summer Turns from fully tight - Winter
All models except those below 0.5 to 1.5 1.5 to 2.5
B12-1001 to 1870; B12S-1001 to 1569 B20-1001 to 3454; B20S-1001 to 1135 1 to 2 1 to 2
These models have a regulator needle with a smaller conical end, & the aperture of the central plug is of smaller diameter than the other models
