Part General Notes on Steering Wheel & Column
Steering wheel The steering wheel, which differed in design throughout the production period as illustrated below, is mounted on splines and held by a large nut to the steering column.
Steering column At its lower end the steering column is a splined, clamp-bolted fit onto the steering box.
Steering box (Scatola) The steering box is a worm and roller type remaining almost the same through production (see above notes). On Series I cars the horn electrical circuit was taken off through a unit attached to the steering box. The drop arm is connected by a steering arm and track-rod to the stub axles. Motion of the arms is about lubricated swivel pins for the steering arm and silent-bloc bushes for the track-rod
Steering wheel shake / vibration This can be avoided by the following: 1. Adjust for maximum toe-in 2. Make sure tyres are well seated on wheel rims. Laid-up cars may well have tyres rusted onto the rims. 3. Precise wheel balancing, and indeed brake drum balancing. 4. Proper maintenance and adjustment of the front brakes. 5. Well serviced front suspension - check there is oil in the bottom reservoir
Covers #5 & #6 above & #6 & #7 below The covers for the steering column were in 3 variants: For the early B10-series in Tav.45 & for later cars in Tav.45bis. The B20 1st, 2nd& 3rd Series had another variant. They all made provision for the standard column gear-change. Many cars having non-original steering wheels have modified items. The covers fit inside one another & are fixed at the upper end by a set screw into the body of headlamp flash switch on the left side, & on the right over the base of the switch. At the lower end they fixed to the dashboard or to an extension of the steering column support. Many cars appear to have a rubber moulding between the covers & the dashboard, no doubt to stop damage to the dashboard paint. Several of the attachments under the dashboard (Indicator cancelling switch, choke & accelerator levers & these covers) are rather insecure & many cars have modifications to stop vibration & movement of the items. Later Aurelias do not have these covers.

Part Notes on Tav.46 above & Tav.46bis below
Tav.46#8 The nut is 32 mm and #11 is a locking tab.
Tav.46. #29 The steering wheel is provided near the centre boss with two threaded holes (6 x 1.25mm?), which are to enable removal of steering wheel from its splines. Two appropriate bolts will do with a cross piece & central arbor to press on the centre of the column – see Tools 8062 015/016/500/509
Tav.46#4 The horn ring is removed by undoing the 2 bolts #28 from the underface of the steering wheel. This must be done before any attempt to dismantle the horn button, otherwise the ring will be damaged.
Tav.46bis#8 The nut is 32mm and #12 is the locking tab. There are the same parts as in Tav.46 above.
Tav.46bis#23 The steering wheel is made of alloy & wood and similar to Nardi-type after-market steering wheels. It is more difficult to remove than the 4th series.
Tav.46bis#9-18 The horn button is a spring fit & must be prised off carefully.
Steering column On B20 series 4 to 6 allowance was made for a 3cm (1.25 inches) adjustment of the steering column (together with the gearshift lever on column change cars & the light stalks) along its axis by removing the spacer provided under the steering column. On B24s adjustment is 6cm (2.4 inches) by means of a locking sleeve.
