The hole has a plug to cover it #64 = B10-75516 but this ceased to be fitted at some point (not given in parts book).

Most 1st series grilles appear to have a little cover to the starting handle hole. Later ones do not.

The parts book indicates this type for the B20 3rd Series as do some old photos of the cars as well as some more modern ones. Most do not have the hole.As this part is very easily damaged & can come off its fixings & be damaged on the road, many cars will have had a replacement grille, & this will have been the later B20 part - see below.

Note that the parts book gives the same number for the complete grille for early & later B20s even though the frame & mesh part numbers are different!

A rubber seal is fitted from car B20-2232 round the edge of the grille frame where it sits on the body = part B20-97465.

These two panels are made of aluminium & painted mid-blue with the lettering showing through in the unpainted metal. They are best lacquered to protect them from corrosion. They have a rubber edge seal.

Bright External Trim

Early bright work included much aluminium alloy, but this was replaced on later cars with chromed brass and steel. The number of bright trim parts markedly increased with the 5th and 6th series cars.

All B20 and B24 cars had side-strips along the doorsill. These were in aluminium up to and including the 5th series (Part T62-1600/2, later 2159220 up to cars B20-3816/B20S-1435). On the later cars the part (2159221) was made of chromed brass. I believe the same applies to the B24 cars except that the change in material was from car B24S-1182 (‘5th’ series) and the strips were ‘handed left and right, whereas they were the same on both sides of B20s.

The later chrome strips can be replaced by the stainless steel ones on early Flavia saloons as it is the right length and width, and the spring clips can be used. (JS).

Another good fitting is said to be from early Audi 100 saloons although they requiring trimming down 2 inches in length and making the ends rounded rather than square (RF)

On restored cars it makes sense to use modern adhesives to secure these side strips, thus reducing the holes drilled into the sill – all starting points for corrosion.

USA Specification External Trim

Cars for the USA market are modified in respect to the other cars for export as follows:

  • Licence plate lamps on rear bumper
  • Side lamps & directional lamps modified according to USA regulations
